Joslyn Skiffington - Senior Teacher Kakapos
Bachelor of Education ECE, Provisional Teachers RegistrationI have been part of Kids Inn since 2002. I am particularly inspired by the teaching practices and philosophy of Reggio Emilia in Italy. I originally studied sports science and I integrate much of this into my teaching practice.
Each morning the children and educators meet to discuss what interests are developing and what resources the children would like to work with. This meeting time also allows opportunity to celebrate special events and news.
Children are encouraged to be responsible for their own decisions – implementing, creating and completing a task. The child initiated philosophy provides a meaningful, quality education. It allows children to interact independently, co-operatively, and thoughtfully. The programme enhances self-esteem and ensures that all children are able to develop to their full potential.
Art Studio
We recently opened an art studio in this centre where the children and educators can work on projects, explore a variety of art mediums including mosaic, wire and clay work.
Preparation for School
Once they turn four the children are encouraged to join the Extension Group. Each morning this group will gather in the studio to undertake project work and activities . Through this time, we aim to extend skills such as planning and active enquiry, group co-operation and social skills, as well as literacy, numeracy and problem solving skills. We feel that giving the four year olds time to work as a group on a daily basis will assist in developing skills that will assist in the transition to school.
